Curriculum

Notes:
Curriculum is based on the established skill and content standards set down by a state education board. (In Texas, the board is the Texas Education Agency.)  The board gives a basic, state-wide curriculum for each grade level and subject area, which local districts and even individual schools adapt according to the needs of their student body.

Curriculum is divided by Course, or subject area: some examples are English, Biology, and History. In each course, the teacher divides the Course by Unit: For example, in English, one Unit could be Literary Analysis. The Unit is then divided into Lessons. For example, in the Literary Analysis Unit, one lesson could be identifying Plot in a short story.

A Lesson must be narrow in scope and focus. Scope is the breadth and range of the content to be covered in the lesson. Focus is what will be emphasized in the content. In the above example, the scope could be plot in the short story “The Lady or The Tiger.” The focus could be diagramming the plot of “The Lady or The Tiger” with emphasis of where the climax of the story would be.
